Our Work

Where we work

The Trust’s projects are situated in three of South Africa’s nine provinces: Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West. Many of the projects are within the Diocese of the Highveld, shown below.

The Highveld is an area of South African which includes Johannesburg. Johannesburg, the largest city in the Highveld, exists as it does today because in the second half of the 19th century gold was discovered near the surface there.

The spoil-tips are still very visible in the landscape there and are being re-worked because technology can now extract even more of the precious metal.

The Diocese covers an area larger than Belgium - mostly rural, with many urban areas around mines and heavy industrial plants.

The HIV programme developed from a special Diocesan Advisory Committee established by the Bishop in 1996. The DACC oversees the programme co-ordination and ensures that ecumenical links and projects are established where possible.

All the work benefits people in the area, regardless of religion, gender, age, race, beliefs or economic status. Inevitably HIV affects the poorest people and these are the main beneficiaries of the programme throughout the whole region. Some 4 million people live in the area.
